1987 Pontiac Fiero came with a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine which provided fuel economy that could rival other cars of its day. With the proper setup and 4-speed manual gearbox, the car could achieve 40 mpg on the highway. With the 3-speed THM-125 automatic gearbox the MPG dropped to 32, which is still very impressive.

The 4-cylinder’s power rating increased to 98 hp (73 kW) with some major modifications which included a roller cam, redesigned intake manifold, distributorless ignition system, open combustion chamber cylinder head and upgraded throttle-body fuel injection system. This was the last year for the spin-on oil filter on the 4-cylinder.

Changes for 1987 Pontiac Fiero were limited to a larger fuel tank (12 versus 10.2 gallons, answering a persistent complaint) and additional minor trim and equipment revisions.

Some features in 1987 Pontiac Fiero are air conditioning, sun/moon roof, tilt wheel, rear window defrost, allow wheels, power side mirrors, cruise control, power windows, power locks, and AM/FM cassette with factory base amplifier.

In 1987 Pontiac Firebird, the Formula was re-introduced replacing the SE, available with a choice of V8′s (LG4, LB9 305 TPI, or L98 350 TPI), 16-inch convex wheels, and the earlier Trans Am “Turbo Bulge” hood. 1987 also saw Pontiac’s top of the line Trans Am: the GTA, which featured adjustable lumbar supports, digital dash, monochromatic paint, and special badges among other top of the line options.

Meanest-looking member of the ’87 lineup was the Trans Am’s new GTA option. It featured the 5.7L V-8 engine and a host of performance-oriented extras, including a fully articulating driver’s seat and an engine oil cooler.

The 1987 Pontiac Firebird rated at 210 horsepower at 4,000 rpm, the 5.7 delivered an impressive 315 pounds-feet of torque to the rear wheels. Offered only with 4-speed automatic, the 5.7-liter engine also was available in regular Trans Ams and in the Formula Firebird-an option package revived this season.

Standard 1987 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am powertrain consisted of a 165-bhp four-barrel 5.0-liter V-8 with 5-speed. Optional again: the TPI version, now available with either manual or automatic shift. Wrap-around spoiler updated and now standard on 1987 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am and 1987 Pontiac Firebird Formula. Regular flat wing spoiler from earlier Trans Am now standard on 1987 Pontiac Firebird.
