2004 Pontiac GTO is no ordinary Pontiac. The car is based on the Monaro, a popular and athletic rear-drive coupe built by GM subsidiary Holden in Australia. Pontiac says the GTO will be able to accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds and reach speeds as high as 160 mph. As many as 18,000 GTOs will be produced annually at GM’s plant in Australia.

2004 Pontiac GTO Ram Air 6 is reminiscent of the production Pontiac GTO Judge of the 60′s and 70s. This vehicle is a modern interpretation of the classic, from its rollback orange exterior color to its authentic and functional ram air hood. Inside is a 5.7 liter V8 engine, the same as offered in the Corvette with the LS1 designation. Power is 350 hp with 365 lb-ft torque.

2004 Pontiac GTO come with 4-speed automatic transmission or 6-speed manual, supplies 575 horses to the 335/30/R20 inch rear tires. The front wheels are fitted with 285/30/20 high performance tires.

Manual and automatic models make use of the same 3.46 final drive axle ratio (which is quite low) to improve general acceleration. A slippery diff will also be packed as standard, useful when one wheel starts to spin (and perhaps smoke), and traction control will be added as well.

The brakes are largish vented 11.7-inch discs up front, solid 11.3-inchers in the rear. Four-channel anti-lock control is standard. At slower speeds our first test car had longish pedal travel that dissipated with heavier use.

The 2004 Pontiac GTO‘s interior shapes flow smoothly into one another, and the materials are rich and handsome. Superb, beautifully stitched leather covers the wheel, the shift boot, and the seats. The seats themselves are simply spectacular, deeply bolstered for excellent support, and roomy enough to be accommodating for drivers of various sizes.

The 2004 Pontiac GTO had four seats and came with leather upholstery, in-dash CD changer, and remote keyless entry. Side airbags, sunroof, and antiskid system were unavailable.

The 2004 Pontiac GTO has a 2+2 seat layout. The front seats are well-bolstered, power-adjustable sports buckets with perforated leather upholstery, and the rear two are nearly identical except for a lack of adjustment and more cushion padding. The front seats sprout a manual-release handle that flips the seatback forward, but only just past vertical. Then a separate button must be held while the front seat motors forward and back with the alacrity of a garden slug.

Color-matching of instrument faces and interior panels with the exterior color is a very stylish touch. The individual rear seats are ergonomically sculpted and scalloped like the fronts. Heads and elbows in the rear get plenty of stretch space.

Leather seats are standard but a heated seats, a navigation system, OnStar or upgraded sound system is not available except via the aftermarket route. Power seats, Power door locks, A/C and cruise control ABS, traction control, and a limited-slip differential is also standard.
