1995 Pontiac Sunfire
The 1995 Pontiac Sunfire replaces the 13-year-old Sunbird. Pontiac officials felt the vehicle was so different from its predecessor that it deserved a new name. The Sunfire’s cousin from Chevrolet, the Cavalier, has also been dramatically redesigned for 1995, but Chevrolet opted to retain the name.
The 1995 Pontiac Sunfire is available as the tested base two-door SE coupe; a base four-door SE sedan; an SE convertible ; and a sporty GT coupe. The Cavalier also comes as a base coupe or sedan, an upgraded LS sedan and a Z24 coupe.
Both the Sunfire GT coupe and Cavalier Z24 coupe run with 2.3-liter, double-overhead cam, 150-horsepower engine. Since GM failed to begin revving up production on those hot-to-trot models till late Apr, GT and Z24 buyers likely will have to wait a month or so for delivery.
Dual front air bags are standard on all 1995 Pontiac Sunfire and Cavalier autos, as are power four-wheel anti-lock brakes.

Interior
Inside, the 1995 Pontiac Sunfire provides a roomy and interesting interior. Although the Neon and Escort both offer more cubic feet of interior space, the Sunfire appears shockingly spacious and comfortable.
Pontiac designers have significantly reduced the quantity of pieces used on the dashboard in opposition to the frequently ill-fitting jigsaw look of many General Motors models. Still, the patchwork appearance lingers on the console that encases the gear shifter, giving it a busy appearance.
The materials used on the dashboard are a major improvement over other GM models as well, with plastics appearing soft and muted. The interior is attractively split up by insets in the door that match the fabric of the seats.
The 1995 Pontiac Sunfire could use thicker foam in the bottom cushion of the driver’s seat. But rear-seat passengers on our test announced that for short trips, seating was quite sufficient with reference to comfort and legroom for a small car. A fold-down seat in the rear is standard and greatly expands the serviceable cargo space in this car. With the rear seatback folded down, skis or surfboards can be carried in the Sunfire with the trunk lid closed.
