2002 Pontiac Firebird is available in coupe and convertible body styles and in three models: base, Formula and Trans Am.   Base engine was a 3.4-liter V6, rated at 160 horsepower. Formula and Trans Am models held a 5.7-liter V8 that made 275 horsepower, and the WS6 package on the Trans Am boosted the horsepower to 325. A 5-speed manual gearbox was standard with base model; the V8 got a 6-speed. 4-speed automatic was optional on both.

From the outside, the 2002 Pontiac Firebird models sport dual power outside mirrors, an integrated rear deck lid spoiler, performance tires, and standard sixteen-inch bright silver five-spoke cast aluminum wheels. The Formula Coupe and Trans Am Coupe feature a hatch roof with a removable, locking sunshade. And of course, pull the top down on the convertible models and have some fun in the sun.

Wheelbase was the same as the previous generation, but the 2002 Pontiac Firebird measured two inches wider, two inches taller, and half an inch longer. Dual airbags were installed and antilock braking was standard. Rust/dent-resistant composite was used for most outer body panels.

To make things even more interesting, Pontiac offers up the 35th Anniversary Collector Edition Trans Am. Elements unique to the Collector Edition include a special paint scheme, detailed interior appointments, special edition emblems and the raw power of Trans Am’s WS6 performance and handling package. Just under 2,000 Collector Editions will be offered to enthusiasts during this special milestone year for the storied American musclecar.

2002 Pontiac Firebird‘s exterior dimensions are 193.3 inches length, 74.4 inches width, 51.2 inches height, 101.1 inches wheelbase, 60.7 inches front track, 60.6 inches rear track, and 37.9 feet curb to curb turning circle.

Inside the 2002 Pontiac Firebird, you feel like you’re in a racing car, as the low seating position and faraway unseen corners make judging near distances difficult. The convertible top, though handsome, is wide behind the side windows, creating a big blind spot that further complicates parallel parking; the glass rear window is small as well. But the power top operates easily. A tonneau cover takes up precious limited trunk space, and thus will be left in the garage by many owners.

Traditional cockpit layouts don’t always result in the most pleasant experience. In theory, Firebirds carry four occupants on cloth-upholstered bucket seats up front and a folding rear seat. Realistically, the cockpit is cramped and seats are low to the ground, making it somewhat difficult to enter and exit. The dashboard offers a full complement of gauges.

Though it suffered from cheap plastic parts that caused rattles and squeaks, an inconvenient rear spoiler that let water into the trunk, and most notably the unfit-for-human-use backseat, the Firebird served its main purpose admirably — fun and sexy roadburner for the everyman.

2002 Pontiac Firebird come with a power antenna, remote mirrors, automatic door locks and power windows with express down function on the driver’s side. Standard equipment already included air conditioning, a full-length center console, cruise control, electric rear window defroster, fog lights, concealed quartz halogen headlights, an AM/FM audio system with CD player, power steering, tachometer and 235/55 tires on 16-inch cast-aluminum wheels.

2002 Pontiac Firebird’s interior dimensions are 37.2 inches front headroom, 35.2 inches rear headroom, 52.8 inches front hip room, 45.9 inches rear hip room, 43 inches front leg room, 28.9 inches rear leg room, 57.4 inches front shoulder room, and 55.8 inches rear shoulder room.
