The 2005 Pontiac G6 is a mid-size, front-wheel-drive, 4-door sports sedan, built on a European platform and powered by a traditional American pushrod V-6 engine. Options include a manual-shift automatic transmission and panoramic roof with sliding panels.

The 2005 Pontiac G6 is available as a sedan, coupe and a convertible with a retractable hardtop. Four trim levels are offered on the Pontiac G6 sedan: Value Leader, base, GT and GXP. Coupes and convertibles are either GTs or GXPs.

Base and GT models come powered by a 200-horsepower 3.5-liter V-6, while a top GTP model offers a high-output 3.9-liter V-6 that uses variable valve timing and active air intake technology to produce 240 horsepower. A new 2.4-liter 170-horsepower “Ecotec” 4-cylinder powerplant will also be offered, beginning later in the model year.

Powering the 2005 Pontiac G6 GT is a 3.5-liter engine rated at 200 horsepower and 220 pound-feet of torque, an increase of 25 hp over the outgoing Pontiac Grand Am. Making the most of the 2005 Pontiac G6 GT‘s available power is a 4-speed manually shiftable transmission, which upshifts at 5,800-rpm redline at full throttle. In the GT, you can shift manually if you choose by moving the shift lever over to a separate gate, and shifting forwards or backwards to upshift or downshift.

The curb weight for the 2005 Pontiac G6 GT is 3,428 lb., so while you’re not likely to win any races with the car, it moves smartly in city traffic. The 2005 Pontiac G6 GT also puts 17-in. wheels on the ends of the so-called “sport tuned” independent suspension; actually, it was a little too “sporty” over the washboard surfaces that are characteristic of metro Detroit—and this is taking into account that it has a 112.3-in. wheelbase, which is certainly long enough to ameliorate some of the pavement problems.

The 2005 Pontiac G6 GT’s smoothed exterior treatment carries into the cabin. The instrument panel sports a striking gauge cluster trimmed with bright chrome bezels, and every LED display across the dash and down the center stack is illuminated by catchy red backlighting.

A tilt steering wheel and power adjustable pedals allow most drivers to find a comfortable seating position. The front seats have beefy side bolsters for extra support when cornering, and controls are easy to reach. Between the front seats is a large storage bin with a 12 volt powerpoint inside, and a useful armrest.

For safety, the 2005 Pontiac G6 GT offers dual-stage front airbags and four height adjustable head restraints, but no centre rear head restraint. Side airbags in the front seats, and curtain head airbags are available as options.
