The Pontiac Straight-8 is an 8-cylinder engine that was used in production Pontiacs from 1933 to 1954. This Pontiac engine was Pontiac’s most powerful engine at the time and was the least expensive eight-cylinder engine built by an American automotive manufacturer.

Of all cylinder layouts without balance shaft a straight-8 design has very low inherent vibration, while the side valve layout contains the moving parts of the valve train within the cast-iron block, enabling it to be very quiet compared to an overhead valve configuration (as in the contemporary Buick engines).

Compression on the “eight” started at 5.7 - 1 initially, and was increased to 6.2 - 1 ratio in 1935. In 1940 this Pontiac engine was increased again to 6.5 - 1. From 1952 to 1954 two compression ratios were specifed, 6.8-1 with syncromesh (manual) transmission, and 7.7-1 ratio with Hydra-Matic (automatic) transmission.

Pontiac G8 Engine has two choice of engine, V6 Engine and V8 Engine.

Pontiac G8 V6 Engine
This Pontiac engine is a 3.6-liter workhorse. When it hits 261-horsepower, the engine reaches approximately 6,300 rpm. It can hit 250 ft. lbs. while maintaining an easy 3,200 rpm. This Pontiac Engine is designed to provide more torque than a standard 3.6-liter engine while simultaneously hitting higher horsepower.

Pontiac G8 V8 Engine
The Pontiac V8 was an overhead valve engine with wedge combustion chambers. This Pontiac engine used cast iron cylinder heads and a cast-iron block. An innovative design feature was mounting the rocker arms on ball pivots on studs set into the cylinder head, rather than using a separate rocker shaft. This allowed more consistent valve action with less weight than a conventional shaft.

This Pontiac engine hits 362-horsepower at 5,700 rpm and includes a 6.0-liter unit. It will hit 391 ft. lbs. while easing into 4,400 rpm.

Pontiac 301 Turbo Engine

The Pontiac 301 Turbo engine was an engine that Pontiac put in 1980 and 1981 Trans Ams and Formula Firebirds. This Pontiac engine produced a mild 205 hp (153 kW). This motor, equipped with an automatic transmission, was used in a 1980 Trans Am for the film “Smokey and the Bandit II”.

Although it did not have as much power as the traditional Pontiac big-block counterparts, the Turbo Trans Ams did have a 4 barrel carburetor. This Pontiac engine was unique in that it had a beefier block than the 77-79 versions (which carried on in the non-turbo versions in 1980 and 1981), a mild camshaft with 350-inch lift and 250 degrees gross duration, a 60 psi oil pump to ensure adequate oil to the oil-cooled Garrett TBO-305 Turbocharger, a rolled fillet crankshaft, a fully baffled oil pan, and a specific 800 cfm Quadrajet carburetor.

This 800 cfm Quadrajet had super rich “DX” secondary metering rods and a remote vacuum source for the primary metering rod enrichment circuit that allowed the “PEVR”, Power Enrichment Vacuum Regulator to release the primary metering rods to move to the up position (enrichment) anytime during boosted conditions.

This was to ensure that there was enough fuel to cool the cast offset dished pistons. Boost was wastegate limited to 9 psi. This Pontiac engine mandated air conditioning, automatic THM350 non-lockup transmission and 3.08 gears. (Wikipedia)
