2004 Pontiac Vibe is a compact car, though one look at it will leave you scratching your head as to how this happened. Roomy and practical, the 2004 Pontiac Vibe is perfect for people who want a smaller vehicle but who also require a lot of cargo space. New for 2004 is a group of dealer-installed accessories addressing both appearance and performance.

Vibe is increasing popularity with enthusiasts is backed by GM with a line of tailored accessories and performance parts from GM SPO, including a sport package that includes front and rear fascia extensions, side skirts and dual spoilers. A supercharger also is available, which boosts horsepower by 30 percent and torque by 18 percent.

The base-model 2004 Pontiac Vibe comes with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. With front-wheel drive, it has 130 hp 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine and a choice of 5-speed manual transmission or 4-speed automatic. With AWD, it has 123 hp and automatic transmission only. The sportier Vibe GT has 180 hp 1.8-liter engine and comes only with front-wheel drive and a 6-speed manual transmission. AWD Vibes are not intended for off-roading and lack low-range gearing.

The 2004 Pontiac Vibe’s brakes are a vented front disc/rear drum combination. GT models, however, use 4-wheel discs with solid rotors at the rear. Vibe models offer three types of wheels: 16-inch steel, 16-inch alloy and 17-inch alloy.

Fusion Orange is offered as an exterior color for 2004 Pontiac Vibe. New options include 17-inch all-season tires and XM Satellite Radio. Exterior styling looks aggressive, with muscular lines spread across a broad structure where wheels push to perimeters and the body hugs the ground.

Interior

The 2004 Pontiac Vibe seats five people. This model was developed to yield a spacious interior within a compact frame. Both the front passenger seat and the 60/40-split rear seat fold flat, and that creates a level load floor. When the backseat is folded down, cargo space behind the driver totals 54.1 cubic feet.

While small on the outside the 2004 Pontiac Vibe offers up to 57 cubic feet of cargo space when the rear seats are folded down. The base model doesn’t offer a lot of safety features as standard equipment but most everything is available as an option. Front airbags are standard on the base model.

Side-impact airbags are optional and come packaged with an alarm system. A Power Group adds cruise control, power windows, and power door locks with remote keyless entry to all models. The optional Moon and Tunes package adds a power glass moonroof and 200-watt audio system. An in-dash six-CD changer is also available as a stand-alone option or as part of a DVD-based navigation system.

All told, the 2004 Pontiac Vibe provides nearly a dozen interior storage containers, nine of which keep contents out of view. There’s even a compartment behind the base of the back seat, where an umbrella or fishing rods can be kept in a covered pocket. The rear window on the Vibe’s hatchback opens independently, so you can reach your stuff without having to open the entire hatch.
