1990 Pontiac Grand Prix went through a slight transformation this year as it adds two sedan models to its previous coupe-only offerings. The Grand Prix is available in LE, SE, and Turbo trim.

The 1990 Pontiac Grand Prix base coupe has been dropped in favor of an LE sedan with a new Quad 4 2.3-liter, 160-hp engine. It comes only with a 3-speed automatic. This new engine is also in the LE coupe. A new STE sedan shares the 3.1-liter, 140-hp V6 engine with the SE coupe, though it can also be equipped with the turbo version of this engine found in the Turbo coupe, rated at a much more exciting 205-hp. This V6 comes with either a 5-speed manual or 4-speed auto transmission.

The 1990 Pontiac Grand Prix’s exterior dimensions are 4950 mm length, 1800 mm width, 1380 mm height, 2731 mm wheelbase, 1511 mm front track, and 1511 mm rear track.

Up front, the 1990 Pontiac Grand Prix STE got unique front and rear fascias, with integral fog lamps across the width of the nose, a la Mercury Sable. The rear sported full-width taillamps.

The 1990 Grand Prix featured a new interior, customized with full analog gauges, a cassette stereo system and eight speakers. The STE had an analog dash similar to the Turbo’s. The STE was also the recipient of specific, articulated bucket seats. In most other respects, the STE’s interior was like the Turbo’s.

The instrument panel and all 80 or so buttons and controls are illuminated with individual red lights. This, combined with car’s navigation system, an electronic compass, gives you the impression of sitting in a jet fighter cockpit.

The 1990 Pontiac Firebird included a 140-horsepower 3.1-liter V6 for base model, which replaced the old 2.8 V6. A 170-horsepower 5.0-liter V8 comes in Formula Firebird, while a 200-horsepower 5.0-liter V8 in the Trans Am. The Trans Am GTA, the fastest of the Firebird line, had a 235-horsepower 5.7-liter V8. The 5.7 V8 came only with an automatic transmission, while the other engines offered both an automatic and a 5-speed manual gearbox.

The 1990 Pontiac Firebird’s exterior dimensions are 4834 mm length, 1839 mm width, 1265 mm height, 2565 mm wheelbase, 1542 mm front track, and 1565 mm rear track.

The other changes to the 1990 Pontiac Firebird included new interior trim and some dashboard restyling. Few 1990 cars were produced, as Pontiac was set to release the 1991 model in midyear. Standard features were kept fairly light, to keep the weight low on this sports car, to ensure optimal performance.

Pontiac changes the lower dash and underdash panels in the 1990 Pontiac Firebird. Accessory switches get new panel above heater and radio controls. Console gets new shift indicator and different leather boot. Steering wheel mounted radio controls disappear from the GTA.

1990 Pontiac Firebird include a standard driver-side air bag, which meant that steering-wheel radio controls could no longer be installed as an option. Cars with power windows added door map pockets with integral cupholders. Split folding rear seatbacks no longer were offered, but the one-piece fold-down seatback was retained.
